Professors from the Universidad de Valparaiso’s Faculty of Dentistry played an active role in the 50th International Congress of Stomatology and Oral Pathology, held in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.

Dr. Karina Cordero, academic and director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology programme, and Dr. Richard Ahumada, professor of the Oral Pathology and Diagnosis programme, both at the UV School of Dentistry, took part as lecturer and evaluator of scientific posters, respectively.

The meeting, organised by the Brazilian Society of Stomatology and Pathology, was attended by more than a thousand specialists.

Dr. Karina Cordero, speaker and co-author of a scientific poster, shared her experience of this, her third participation in the congress, highlighting the relevance of presenting in front of international leaders in the field. On this occasion, Cordero participated in the Clinical Pathology Conference, a collaborative exercise between specialists with the aim of diagnosing clinical cases based on limited information.

Dr. Cordero emphasised that the challenge was more than just sharing her work with colleagues of her own level, but also to present in front of leading figures in the field, whose research and publications she has followed throughout her career. She also appreciated the feedback received from the specialists, which along with strengthening her work, allowed her to establish connections for future scientific collaborations, thus expanding existing international networks.

Dr. Richard Ahumada played a dual role in the congress, presenting a poster on a clinical case developed in the Pathology and Oral Medicine programme at UV together with Dr. Cordero and the resident Felipe Contreras, as well as acting as a jury member in the evaluation of scientific posters, sharing views and experiences with Brazilian colleagues.

Dr Ahumada noted that both the internship and the congress fully met his expectations and objectives. ‘As Professor Karina Cordero mentioned, this occasion allowed us to showcase the work we are doing at the Universidad de Valparaíso, both in the training of specialists in Pathology and Oral Medicine and in the scientific area that we pursue as teachers,’ he said.

‘This type of participation not only adds value to our medical specialism, but also strengthens the positioning of our university in the field of dentistry at an international level,’ he concluded.
