CIESAL researcher participates in the 4th Meeting of Young Cancer Researchers

9/06/2025

Natalia Pérez Barraza, Biomedicine doctoral student at the University of Granada and associate researcher at the Universidad de Valparaíso’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Health Studies (CIESAL), was selected to participate in the IV Meeting of Young Cancer Researchers (EJIC 2025), organised by the Spanish Association Against Cancer and held in Calatayud (Zaragoza, Spain), between 5th and 7th June 2025.

Her participation was secured following a highly competitive process, during which more than 120 applications were received from young researchers. Ultimately, the organising committee selected only 30 pre-doctoral students to attend the event in recognition of the scientific quality, originality, and relevance of their proposals in the field of oncology.

During the event, Natalia presented her research in poster format as part of the EJIC Poster Contest. Entitled “Improving histopathological diagnosis of prostate cancer using artificial intelligence tools”, the work forms part of her doctoral thesis which is being supervised by Dr. Víctor Carriel Araya (Department of Histology, University of Granada), in collaboration with Dr. Claudio Córdova Lepe (Interdisciplinary Centre for Biomedical Research and Engineering for Health, MEDING, Universidad de Valparaíso).

The research proposes using artificial intelligence as a tool to support histopathological diagnosis of prostate cancer, thereby contributing to the development of more accurate, objective and reproducible methodologies.

Natalia’s selection is noteworthy and highlights the importance of interdisciplinary and collaborative work in biomedical research, as well as the growing value of artificial intelligence in tackling complex diseases such as cancer.
