{"id":1543,"date":"2023-11-03T15:17:14","date_gmt":"2023-11-03T18:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ciesal.uv.cl\/?p=1543"},"modified":"2024-10-28T08:57:02","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T11:57:02","slug":"investigadores-de-6-universidades-chilenas-bajo-liderazgo-de-ciesal-publican-importante-trabajo-de-investigacion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/en\/2023\/11\/03\/investigadores-de-6-universidades-chilenas-bajo-liderazgo-de-ciesal-publican-importante-trabajo-de-investigacion\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers from 6 chilean universities, under the leadership of CIESAL, publish important research work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1559\" src=\"http:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Eva-Madrid-exponiendo-jpg-250x167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"406\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Eva-Madrid-exponiendo-jpg-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Eva-Madrid-exponiendo-jpg-700x467.jpg 700w, https:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Eva-Madrid-exponiendo-jpg-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Eva-Madrid-exponiendo-jpg-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Eva-Madrid-exponiendo-jpg-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Eva-Madrid-exponiendo-jpg.jpg 1618w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 406px) 100vw, 406px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The journal Environmental Geochemistry and Health, a Dutch journal published by Springer, has just published the article <strong><em>Oxidative damage associated with exposure to heavy metals present in topsoils in central Chile<\/em><\/strong>, which deals with the association between the presence of heavy metals in the area of Quinteros and Puchuncav\u00ed and the oxidative balance of the people living in that area.<\/p>\n<p>This study, led by Eva Madrid, a researcher from CIESAL, is the second to show associations between the presence of heavy metals and any element that could be considered harmful to the health of people in that area.\u00a0\u00a0 For at least two decades, it has been assumed and commented that pollutants from the energy-industrial core of Ventanas may be exerting some kind of damage in the population living around the complex, but only a previous article (by the same team of researchers) has managed to show some kind of effect (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35188613\/\">see post<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1560\" src=\"http:\/\/ciesaluv.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Grafico-Puchuncavi-jpg-250x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"348\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The researchers mapped soils with more than 600 samples, establishing arsenic, lead and copper concentration maps for three municipal districts: Quinteros, Puchuncav\u00ed and Conc\u00f3n.\u00a0 Red zones were then established as those that greatly exceeded the permitted limits for the presence of these metals, and green zones as those that maintained heavy metals at levels within acceptable ranges using international soil standards (Chile does not have standards for maximum concentrations of metals in soil).<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, 280 permanent inhabitants who had resided in the area for more than five years were sampled: 140 volunteers from the red zone were compared with 140 inhabitants of green zones to establish whether there was free radical damage in the tissues and cellular components of the exposed individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Free radicals are unpaired electrons that make molecules unstable. Free radicals sometimes accumulate in cells and damage other molecules, such as DNA, lipids and proteins.
